Top Ten Universities that take AP Credit

Taking AP Classes in high school can be a great asset. Not only does it readily prepare you for college level courses, but it can also help you to save money and time.

Unfortunately, some schools do not accept AP scores. Dual degree or accelerated programs specifically will require you to take prerequisite classes.

Are you looking to apply to top schools like UChicago, Yale, or Princeton? Every school does it differently.  It can be confusing to sort through all of the websites, but at Simply Studies we do it for you! Look at the list below to see what AP scores are accepted for credit at top 10 schools.

1. Princeton University

They do not accept 3’s for credit. You must have a 5 in the following courses to receive credit:

  • Languages: 1 unit
  • English: 1 unit
  • Math: AP Calc AB, AP Calc BC:  1-2 units (also dependent on math SAT score check site)
  • Science: AP Biology, AP Physics, AP Chemistry: 2 units
  • Economics: AP Macroeconomics, AP Microeconomics: 1 unit

You must have a 4 in the following courses to receive credit:

  • History: AP Euro, APUSH, AP World - 1 unit
  • Math: AP Calc BC: 1 unit
  • Science: AP Chemistry: 1 unit

2. Harvard University

Harvard only accepts AP scores of 5. Below is a list of the amount of credits you'll get for different AP exams.

Art:

  • AP Art History (8 credits)

English:

  • AP Lang (4 credits)
  • AP Lit (8 credits)

History and Social Science:

  • AP Euro (8 credits)
  • AP Macroeconomics (4 credits)
  • AP Microeconomics (4 credits)
  • AP Psychology (4 credits)
  • APUSH (8 credits)

Math and Computer Science:

  • AP Calculus AB (4 credits)
  • AP Calculus BC (4 credits)
  • AP Statistics (4 credits)

Science:

  • AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics B (8 credits)
  • AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism, AP Physics C Mechanics (4 Credits)

Language:

  • AP Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish Lang, Spanish Lit (8 credits)
  • AP Latin (4 credits)

3. Columbia University

Only scores of 4 and up are accepted. They offer a very wide range of AP for advanced credit click the link and check their website to see their detailed list!

4. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Credit is not given for the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Environmental Science. You must get a 5 on the AP Physics C exams—Mechanics and Electricity & Magnetism to receive credit.

In order to receive credit for Calc BC, you must have a 5 and take a diagnostic test. Check website details for Calc AB information.

5. Yale University

“Yale awards acceleration credit to students for scores of 4 or 5 on some AP exams. Acceleration credit may offer some students the option to graduate in fewer than eight terms, but only after completing specific courses in specific departments.”

6. Stanford University

Stanford accepts 4s and 5s for college credit.

Math and Computer Science:

  • Calc AB - Score:5  (8 credits)
  • Calc BC - Score: 4 or 5  (8 to 10 credits)
  • Comp Science A - Score: 4 or 5 ( 5 credits)
  • Comp Sci Principles - Score: 4 or 5 ( 5 credits)

English: n/a

History and Social Science: n/a

Science:

  • Chemistry -Score: 4-5 (Credits: 8-10^2*)
  • Physics C Mechanics - Score: 4-5 (Credits: 4)
  • Physics C - Electricity and Magnetism - Score: 4-5 (Credits: 4)

Language: For the following languages only scores of 5 are accepted for 10 credits -

  • Chinese Lang and Culture
  • French
  • Italian Lang and Culture
  • German, Latin, and Spanish

7. University of Chicago

You must have a 5 on your AP exam to receive credit for all subjects except AP Biology and AP Calculus BC (for these classes a score of 4 is accepted). For the majority of subjects you must take a placement exam.

You can submit AP credit for: Calc AB, Calc BC, Chemistry, Physics C: Mechanics, Physics C: E&M, Biology, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Spanish Lit, Spanish Lang.

For the most part, submitting scores for these classes make up for the general level course. AP Credit Language classes satisfy the language competency requirement.

The following AP Classes are considered electives:

  • Art History, European History, World History, APUSH
  • Economics, Gov and Politics
  • English Lang, English Lit
  • Statistics
  • Studio Design

These grant you 100 units of general electives credit.

8. University of Pennsylvania

Only scores of 4s and 5s are accepted.

A 5 in Spanish Lang, Spanish Lit, Latin, Italian, French, and German will give you enough credit to fulfil the language requirement.

9. California Institute of Technology (CalTech)

AP Credit at CalTech is a little different. Getting credit for “AP or IB classes is not automatic. Course credit and/or placement in an accelerated program is sometimes granted as deemed appropriate by the department faculty”.

You must take a diagnostic/placement test and be approved by department faculty to receive credit.

10. Johns Hopkins University

Math and Computer Science:

  • Stats- Score: 4 (Credit:4)
  • Calc AB- Score: 5 (Credit: 4)
  • Calc BC- Score 3-5 (Credit: 4-8)
  • Computer Science A- Score: 5 (Credit: 3)

English: N/A

  • History and Social Science:
  • Macroeconomics- Score: 5 (Credit: 3)
  • Microeconomics- Score: 5 (Credit: 3)

Science:

  • Biology- Score: 5 (Credit: 6)
  • Chemistry- Score: 4-5 (Credit: 4-8)
  • Environmental- Score: 4(Credit: 4)
  • Physics C: E&M- Score: 4 (Credit: 4)
  • Physics C: Mechanics- Score: 4(Credit: 4)

  • Language: N/A
